How To Write An Effective Introduction For An Essay: Useful Instructions

In your essay, the introduction serves to introduce the topic and your thesis statement. The more catchy, interesting and attractive your introduction is, the more readers will keep on reading your paper. If you want to compose a great essay introduction, you need to keep in mind several following guidelines.

  1. Create a hook.
  2. Hooks are interesting and catchy phrases that you insert in the introduction to attract the readers’ attention. That is, the hook should leave your readers fascinated, attracted, outraged, etc. and willing to read on.

  3. Use statistics.
  4. Sometimes it makes sense to use some statistic data to decorate the hook with a piece of rare information that will keep readers interested in the further development of the topic.

  5. Use catchy stories.
  6. Depending on the type and formal coloring of your essay, you can try using catchy stories in the introduction. That is, if you are writing a rather informal work, you can try using a funny story. If you are into composing a serious work, use a dramatic beginning.

  7. Use quotations.
  8. Don’t be afraid to use quotations in the introduction. A smartly chosen quote can be a great link between the introductory part and the body of your research. An interesting phrase can be a great hook.

  9. Attract readers with the help of questions.
  10. A properly formulated question can be a hook that tempts readers to express their own point of view and read on to see whether it matches the author’s vision.

  11. Create a bridge.
  12. Make sure that you have composed a good bridge between the hook and the body text, because in case your hook is very extraordinary and seemingly not related to your main topic, you will need to explain the connection between them carefully.

  13. Compose your thesis statement.
  14. It’s an important part of the introduction. The thesis statement should be laconic, within one or two phrases, conveying the main problem you are going to discuss in your essay.

  15. Check what you are writing.
  16. Always be concentrated and follow your own thought. You need to make sure that you have not gone off the topic and missed the main idea.

  17. Answer your own questions.
  18. If you have stated one or more questions, make sure that you can provide answers to all of them. There is nothing worse than an essay that hooks with the help of questions, but there are no answers to them in the body paragraphs.
